Hingis takes on Frazier

The Swiss tennis star, Martina Hingis, takes on America's Amy Frazier in the quarter final of the WTA 2000 Acura Classic tournament in San Diego.

In her first game at the tournament on Tuesday, Hingis struggled to dispose of Dominique Roost of Belgium. Hingis won the first set convincingly, 6-2, but Roost pulled ahead to 6-5 in the second before losing her nerve and her serve. Hingis won the second set in a tie-break.

It was her first game in a tournament since her elimination in the quarter finals at Wimbledon. The world number one said she was generally satisfied with her game.

On Wednesday Russia’s Anna Kournikova caused a sensation at the tournament by beating Hingis’s closest rival, the world number two, Lindsay Davenport. In a closely fought contest, Davenport took the first set 6-2, before ceding the second 4-6.

Kournikova appeared unstoppable in the third, taking a 4-0 lead. But Davenport clawed back to 4-4. At 5-5, Davenport missed two chances to take her opponent’s serve and another four opportunities to pull back to 6-6 in the following game. In a tense finish, the 19 year-old Russian won the third and last set 7-5.

In other games in San Diego, Venus Williams continued on top form, breezing past South Africa’s Amanda Coetzer in straight sets.
