Hingis through to third round in Key Biscayne

Hingis faced few difficulties against Italy's Rita Grande swissinfo.ch

Defending champion and top seed, Switzerland's Martina Hingis, has blasted her way into the third round of the Key Biscayne Masters Series tournament in Miami.

Hingis won 6-2, 6-2 against Italy’s Rita Grande, after clocking up 27 points on 34 first serves.

“I have great memories of this tournament,” said Hingis, who also won the event in 1997. “I either play great here or I play terrible. I’ll see how it goes this year.”

Two other Swiss players fared less well in the second round. Patty Schnyder was knocked out of the championship after losing 2-6, 4-6 to Sandra Cacic of the US. It was the sixth defeat in a row for the Basel player, who hasn’t won a match since the Australian Open in January.

Schnyder, who recently reinstated her former coach, Eric von Harpen, said she still lacked confidence and just couldn’t get her game together.

In other play, Switzerland’s Miroslava Vavrinec suffered a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Jelena Dokic.
