Hingis through to US semi-finals
The world's number one tennis player, Switzerland's Martina Hingis, has secured her place in the US Open semi-finals with a lightning-quick straight sets victory over Czech teenager, Daja Bedanova.
In one of the fastest matches of the Grand Slam tournament so far, Hingis knocked Bedanova out in just 42 minutes. The top-seed walked off the New York court with a scorecard of 6-2, 6-0.
Hingis won the first 11 points of the first set, only to squander her advantage by losing the next ten in a row. But 3-2 down and 40-5, Bedanova sent a backhand wide and handed Hingis a two-game cushion.
After that, it was all downhill for 18-year-old Bedanova, who is ranked 37th on the WTA Tour.
The Swiss star enjoyed a solid match, making only one double fault and taking all break points she could.
“The balls were coming at me at a slower pace today. You don’t see that very often today. I welcomed that with open arms,” Hingis said after the match.
She is set to face Serena Williams, who ended a streak of losses with a third-set win to reach the semifinals.
Hingis, who turns 21 on September 30, is looking to win her first Grand Slam in nearly three years.
