Police chased the unidentified gunman across northern Switzerland on Friday after he shot and wounded a 31-year-old Turkish man at a factory in canton Solothurn.
Police said the gunman had opened negotiations with them near the border with neighbouring Liechtenstein after an eight-hour chase.
They said they had followed the hijacked car at a safe distance in a clearly marked car at the gunman's request and allowed him to fill the getaway car with petrol at one stage.
Police closed sections of the A1 Zurich-St Gallen motorway during the chase for security reasons.
