Hostage drama ends peacefully

A 22-year-old Turkish man, who hijacked a car and took the driver hostage after shooting a man, has given himself up. Police said he freed the hostage unharmed, after negotiating with police psychologists.

The man then shot himself in the head and was rushed to hospital, although Police said he was not seriously injured.

Police chased the unidentified gunman across northern Switzerland on Friday after he shot and wounded a 31-year-old Turkish man at a factory in canton Solothurn.

Police said the gunman had opened negotiations with them near the border with neighbouring Liechtenstein after an eight-hour chase.

They said they had followed the hijacked car at a safe distance in a clearly marked car at the gunman’s request and allowed him to fill the getaway car with petrol at one stage.

Police closed sections of the A1 Zurich-St Gallen motorway during the chase for security reasons.
