Ice-hockey veteran returns to NHL after stint in Switzerland
The veteran National Hockey League defenseman, Fredrik Olausson, who spent last season in Switzerland, has signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.
The 34-year-old Swede spent the 2000-01 season with Bern in the Swiss Hockey League, where he collected 12 goals and 16 assists in 42 games.
He came to Switzerland after 14 years in the NHL, playing for Anaheim, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Pittsburgh.
Red Wings general manager, Ken Holland, said Olausson had signed a contract on Thursday worth $750,000 (SFr1,335,750). He said he was very happy to have such a skilled player on his side.
“He talked to me at the end of the year and said that he wanted to play again and play here in Detroit,” Holland said. “He’s taking a pay cut, but everybody has bonuses. So he’s pretty happy.”
Olausson has played in 931 NHL games, producing a tally of 143 goals and 415 assists.
