Swiss industry moved into top gear in the last quarter of 1999, with production and turnover increasing strongly.
The Federal Office of Statistics in Neuchatel reports that production in the secondary sector, excluding the construction industry, rose by 8.2 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.
Orders were up by 13 per cent supported by foreign demand, and turnover increased by 7.9 per cent.
Above-average production performers included the chemical industry, manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment, and the precision machinery and optical equipment sectors.
However, the textile and clothing industry, leather products and footwear, and the manufacture of motor vehicles recorded production slowdowns of more than three per cent.
