Detailed figures for May from the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs showed that unemployment had fallen most in the construction industry where 577 fewer people were out of work. That's a decline of 15.4 per cent compared to April.

In the catering industry, 244 fewer people were unemployed compared to the previous month, a decrease of three per cent.

The number of long-term unemployed also fell by 167 or 1.6 per cent to 10,399.

But while prospects for most sectors improved, the financial industry was hit by falling employment, caused by the economic slowdown in the United States. The number of those unemployed in this industry rose 6.4 per cent.

Transport and communication also registered a rise of 3.1 per cent.

Unemployment in Switzerland stands at a nine and a half year low at just 1.7 per cent or 61,097.
