Two more Swiss tennis players have seen their Australian Open adventures come to an end, with Michel Kratochvil and Emmanuelle Gagliardi both losing their third round matches on Friday.

Gagliardi made a good start against Spain’s Marta Marrero, taking the first set 6-4. But the 24-year-old Genevan then lost her way badly in the last two sets, eventually going down 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The Swiss woman caused one of the tournament’s first major upsets earlier this week when she knocked fifth seed Conchita Martinez out of the second round.

Bern’s Michel Kratochvil was also unable to keep his good run going. After beating US Open finalist Max Mirnyi in the second round, Kratochvil struggled from the start against Australia’s number 12 seed, Pat Rafter.

The 21-year-old Swiss player, who may have earned himself a Davis Cup place with his performances this week, put up a strong fight at the end of the match but was defeated 4-6, 1-6, 5-7.
