Bern's Michel Kratochvil has made it through to the second round of the San Jose tennis open in California. The Swiss player defeated Italian Davide Sanguinetti, 6-2, 6-0.

Kratochvil had little trouble beating Sanguinetti on Wednesday. The Italian was a finalist at the St Jude Classic in Memphis on Sunday, but is hampered by a back injury.

In the next round, Kratochvil will face American Andre Agassi, the tournament’s number one seed.

Switzerland’s Emmanuelle Gagliardi was knocked out in the first round of the WTA tournament in Acapulco on Tuesday, 24 hours after her Fed-Cup teammate Miroslava Vavrinec suffered the same fate.

Like Vavrinec, Gagliardi (WTA 85) was beaten in straight sets. The Swiss number three did at least manage to take her opponent, Argentina’s Mariana Díaz-Oliva (WTA 87), to a tie-break in the first set.

But after losing the tie-break 7-2, the 24-year-old Genevan then conceded the second and final set 6-3.

Tuesday’s defeat saw Gagliardi dumped out in the first round of a tournament for the second time in three events this season.
