Switzerland's most successful beach volleyball duo, Martin and Paul Laciga, are out of the world championships in Klagenfurt, Austria.

The brothers were beaten 22-24 and 20-22 in the quarter final against their former training partners, Andre Kjemperud and Vegard Hoidalen, from Norway.

The disappointing result comes only hours after the brothers triumphed over the Russians, Sergey Erminshin and Mikhail Kouchnerev, 21-19, 21-14.

“It’s a pity that we lost, but I’m not surprised because our opponents were strong,” said Martin Laciga. His brother Paul echoed the sentiment: “They were better, I can live with that.”

The result places the Laciga team in fifth place in the beach volleyball world rankings.

The pair reached the finals of the first four tournaments in the series, which took place in Tenerife, Gstaad, Berlin and Stavanger in Norway, only to lose out on lifting the trophy each time.
