Leuenberger picks up railway award

Transport Minister Moritz Leuenberger has won this year's European Railway Award for his role to further a sustainable transport policy.

The prize, which is worth €5,000 (SFr7,414) and awarded by the European Railway Industries and the Community of European Railways, was handed over at a ceremony in Brussels on Tuesday.

EU Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani said Leuenberger's efforts to put transit goods onto rail and to introduce a tax for heavy goods trucks were setting an example for Europe.

Leuenberger dedicated the award to Swiss voters who supported him in several nationwide ballots on the issue, according to a transport ministry statement.

Sweden's Bengt Sterner won this year's technical award for the Electronic Train Control System.
