75 people rescued by helicopter from cable car

An Easter ski outing ended in drama on Sunday when 75 people, including children, had to be rescued by helicopter from a stranded cable car in the eastern Swiss Alps.

The Swiss Air Rescue Service (Rega) said four helicopters were involved in the rescue operation at the Diavolezza cable car lift near the resort of St Moritz in the canton of Graubünden.

It took more than two hours to winch all the passengers to safety. No-one was injured. The cable car was stuck on the way up to the 3,000-metre ski resort.

The 30-year-old lift was modernised and overhauled during this winter season at a cost of SFr4.5 million ($4.9 million), according to the cable car operator’s website.
