Calmy-Rey seeks to end tensions with Colombia
Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey says Colombia has thanked Switzerland for its mediation efforts in the peace process.
Colombia apologized for the inappropriate use of the Red Cross emblem during the liberation of hostages from the hands of leftwing rebels last month.
Calmy-Rey, for her part, said the dispute over Colombia’s use of the emblem of the Swiss-run International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was over.
Speaking after talks in Bogotà on Monday, she said she had called on the Colombian government to seek a negotiated solution with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) and urged the rebels to release all their hostages.
Colombia has announced it no longer requires the services of outside mediators, including Switzerland.
Calmy-Rey also said both countries had agreed to regular political consultations.
On the last day of her visit Calmy-Rey went to see a number of development projects, including a hospital for mine victims supported by the Swiss Development Agency.
Calmy-Rey flies on to Brazil on Wednesday.
