Canada defeat Swiss ice hockey juniors
Swiss hopes of capturing the Junior World Ice Hockey Championship title have been dashed after Canada beat Switzerland in the semi-finals.
The Swiss under-20 team suffered its 14th defeat at the hands of the Canadians in the Czech Republic.
The first period saw neither side score a goal, but Canada moved quickly to make up for lost time, scoring three goals in the second period.
Steve Ott opened the scoring at 6:04 with a short-handed goal. Mike Cammalleri, the tournament’s leading scorer, added the second at 12:27, and Brian Sutherby scored the third with 6:07 remaining in the second period.
Despite Swiss efforts to make up the deficit, Canada scored a goal in the third period to win 4-0.
“I have to give credit to the Swiss team for their performance,” said Canada’s coach Stan Butler said. “We can only thank our defense and goalie Pascal Leclaire.”
After 14 encounters and 14 Canadian victories, the overall score of 99-26 is proof the Swiss under-20s have some way to go before they can claim the world champion crown.
Switzerland will now face Finland in a match to decide third place, while Canada are due to play Russia in the finals.
