Chinese snub Amnesty human rights petition

Amnesty International has failed in a bid to hand over a petition on human rights to the Chinese embassy in the Swiss capital, Bern.

The embassy refused to open its doors to receive the petition on Tuesday and nearly 25,000 signatures were instead left in boxes outside the compound.

The petition called for urgent steps to improve human rights before the launch of the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing in August.

Daniel Bolomey, secretary-general of the Swiss section of Amnesty, said he was disappointed but would continue to try to meet the Chinese ambassador.

The organisation says the human rights situation in China remains unchanged, despite promises of improvements.
