Federer sails into semifinals in Melbourne
Roger Federer has secured a place in the semifinals of the Australian Open after powering through his quarterfinal match against Juan Martin del Potro.
The world number two beat the 20-year-old Argentinian, one of the rising stars of the circuit, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0 on Tuesday in Melbourne.
Del Potro, ranked eighth, only managed to score eight points in the second set and Federer took just 19 minutes to win the third set of the 80-minute match.
The Swiss tennis star served up 12 aces during the match and made nine unforced errors, compared with del Potro’s 24.
“He must not be at the top of his game. I played really well, Everything worked. I hope I can keep this up,” Federer said after the match.
Federer will play Andy Roddick of the United States in the semifinal. He has beaten Roddick in 15 of the 17 previous matches they have played.
