Hingis eases into next round of Amelia Island tournament

Switzerland's Martina Hingis enjoyed an easy second round win at the Amelia Island tournament in Florida on Wednesday.

The world number one, who had a bye in the previous round, had no trouble defeating Virginia Ruano Pascal, 6-2, 6-1.

Hingis, playing in her mother’s absence for the first time since her shock first round defeat at Wimbledon in 1999, polished off her Spanish opponent in less than an hour and two quick sets. The match was also the Swiss player’s first clay court game of the year.

The tournament appears wide open for Hingis, with a number of her main opponents having pulled out. Monica Seles, the two-time defending champion, Jennifer Capriati, the winner of the Australian Open, and Mary Pierce, a regular in the final, all failed to hit a ball in Florida.

Hingis’ next match will pit her against the 15th seed, Slovakia’s Henrieta Nagyova on Thursday.
