Lugano stay in top spot
The Ticinese side, Lugano, stay in Switzerland's first division's top spot after Sunday's final matches of the qualifying round. Hot on the heels of Lugano are St Gallen. FC Zurich narrowly beat Grasshoppers in the Zurich Derby.
Following Sunday’s matches it is now clear which eight teams will go forward to the Swiss football championship round. The top eight teams to fight over the championship title include: Lugano (1st), St Gallen (2nd), Grasshoppers (3rd), Lausanne (4th), Basel (5th), Servette Geneva (6th), Sion (7th) and Zurich (8th).
The bottom four teams, which will have to fight for their survival in the first division, have also been firmly established. The teams to enter the relegation playoffs in the first division are Aarau (9th), Yverdon (10th), Neuchâtel (11th) and Lucerne (12th).
They will clash with the second division’s top four teams which will be looking to get promoted.
Sunday’s matches saw Lugano snatch another point from their 1-1 draw against Lucerne, while FC Zurich managed to pull off a 2-3 win against their rivals Grasshoppers. Xamax came away with a 1-0 win against Sion.
In other fixtures, Yverdon held Aarau to a 3-3 draw, while Servette asserted themselves against St Gallen, 3-1.
Basel weren’t able to contain Lausanne at home. They lost 2-3.
