Maier and Kostelic power ahead in World Cup

The Swiss Didier Cuche failed to impress at the men's World Cup giant slalom event in Val d'Isère Keystone

Austria's Hermann Maier and Croatia's Janica Kostelic had outstanding runs in Sunday's World Cup events. Only one Swiss skier, Michael Von Grünigen, managed to finish in the top 10.

While the Austrian Hermann Maier celebrated his 33rd win at the World Cup giant slalom in the French resort of Val d’Isère, there were long faces among the Swiss. The slalom hopeful. Michael Von Grünigen, only finished in fourth position.

His compatriot, Didier Cuche, crossed the finish line in 11th place, while Steve Locher came 16th.

The Austrians led by Maier had a more successful day at Val d’Isère, with an Austrian sweep of all three top places.

In the Italian resort of Sestriere, meanwhile, the Croatian Janica Kostelic won her third consecutive women’s Alpine skiing World Cup slalom on Sunday.

The Swiss women, however, failed to make much of an impression in Sestriere. Sonia Nef only finished in 25th position, while Karin Roten came 15th.
