Shock Federer defeat in Davis Cup

The United States leads Switzerland 2:0 in the Davis cup first round series after Roger Federer went down to a shock four set defeat by John Isner.

In the match played before a crowd of 7,000 in Fribourg on Friday, the world number 3 won the first set 6:4 without dropping serve, but went on to lose 3:6, 6:7 (4), 2:6.

It was the first time Isner, ranked 17th in the world, had beaten the Swiss champion.

Earlier, Stanislas Wawrinka lost the opening match in five sets to Mardy Fish. In an exciting game lasting four hours and 17 minutes Fish, ranked eighth in the world, eventually won 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 9-7 against the 28th-ranked Swiss.

Switzerland could be knocked out on Saturday when Federer and Wawrinka – the current Olympic gold medallists – play the much less experienced US pair Mike Bryan and Ryan Harrison.
