Swimming: Lütolf posts fastest time in heats

Switzerland's Remo Lütolf has posted the fastest time in the heats in the 50m breaststroke at the European Swimming Championships in Helsinki. The swimmer from St Gallen also swam a new Swiss record of 28"20.

Lütolf shaved 13 hundredths of a second off his personal best and former Swiss record of 28″33, set last May at Monte Carlo. He will take part in the semi-finals later today, and has already qualified for the Olympic Games in Sydney.

The other Swiss in action on Wednesday were all eliminated. Nils-Ole Janshon set new Swiss records on the 800m (8’15″17) and 1,500m freestyle (15’41″81), but that was not enough to qualify either for the final, or the Olympics. He improved his personal best on the 1,500m by more than five seconds.

In the women’s events, Agata Czaplicki and Carmela Schlegel finished 23rd and 28th respectively in the 50m breaststroke. Dominique Diezi and Ivana Gabrilo ended 21st and 28th in their event, the 100m backstroke.
