Swiss curlers runners-up at European tournament

Swiss skipper Mariam Ott has lost her European championship, falling to Germany in the final of the European Curling Championships in Aberdeen, Scotland.

Ott and her team on Saturday lost 5:7 to Andrea Schöpp, a seven-time European champion, to take silver.

On the men’s side, the Swiss team led by Basel skipper Markus Eggler lost 6:5 to Sweden in an extra end in the final, also taking silver

The result is the first major championship medal for the team of Eggler, Simon Strübin, Jan Hauser and Ralph Stöckli. Eggler is the 1992 world champion.

For Switzerland’s women, the result was close: their last stone in the final end slid long.

The Swiss and German women had been tied 3:3 by the fourth end and Ott and her team of Carmen Küng, Carmen Schäfer and Janine Greiner appeared to have things under control.

But the Germans stole two stones for a 5:3 advantage, which the Swiss did not recover from.

Ott is a two-time European champion (1996 and 2008) and now has ten medals at major championships.
