Swiss group files racism lawsuit against Chinese ambassador

A Swiss anti-racism group has filed a legal complaint against the Chinese ambassador to Switzerland. The suit, which was also brought against the head of the Chinese tourist office, accused the two of racial discrimination towards Tibetans.

The Swiss organisation “Action for the right to self-determination of all peoples” accuses Ambassador Wu Chianfu and the tourist boss of breaking Switzerland’s anti-racism laws.

The group says the Chinese Embassy’s Internet homepage and tourist brochures “repudiated, minimised and justified” the “events and massacres” which China carried out against Tibetans.

The lawsuit was confirmed on Wednesday by Urs Broder, spokesman for the Zurich district attorney’s office.

Chinese embassy officials said they had not been informed that the suit had been launched.

Under Swiss law, it is a crime to use discriminatory language to describe a person’s ethnic or religious background.
