Swiss qualify in men’s figure skating event

Two Swiss figure skaters, Stéphane Lambiel and Patrick Meir, both qualified in the men's event at the European Championships in Lausanne on Monday.

Lambiel, the 16-year old Swiss champion, booked his place in style by finishing fourth in the qualifying group.

“I was nervous and lacking in confidence because the training hadn’t gone particularly well recently,” said Lambiel. “I think I gave almost my best performance – I hope I can keep that level up.”

Meier had to work a little harder, finishing the second qualifying group in 15th place with only the top 15 going through.

“I know that I wasn’t very well prepared,” Meier admitted. “But the end result wasn’t so far removed from how I’ve been performing during training. There was only a small chance of my doing really well.”

The former world champion and tournament favourite, Alexei Yagudin of Russia, topped the first two qualifying groups after landing seven triple jumps.

Russians also topped the bill at the pairs’ short programme, with Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin ranking first with 0.5 points. They were followed by another Russian duo, Maria Petrova and Alexei Tikhonov.

The Lausanne event, which runs until Sunday, is offering Swiss fans the chance to meet some of the sport’s biggest names in action ahead of next month’s Winter Olympics.
