Wawrinka’s victory bodes well for Switzerland’s male players, who travel to Kazakhstan on September 17-19 to try to keep their spot in the top tier of the Davis Cup.

Earlier in the week five-time champion Roger Federer sailed through his opening match and faces Andreas Beck from Germany on Thursday afternoon, local time.
Of the three Swiss women playing in New York – all unseeded – only Patty Schnyder made it to the second round, beating Kirsten Flipkens from Belgium 6-1 6-3.
Timea Bacsinszky lost a close match to 21st seed Zheng Jie of China 7-6, 7-6. Stefanie Vögele was beaten by Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
