Vonn wins in Crans Montana

American skier Lindsey Vonn has won the women's downhill at the Swiss resort of Crans Montana - her fifth downhill victory of the season.

Vonn powered down the course in 1:23:57, beating Austrian Renate Götschl by 0.61 seconds. The best-placed Swiss was Martina Schild in 8th.

Nadia Fanchini of Italy was third in the race, which was delayed by 30 minutes because of fog.

Vonn has extended her lead in the overall cup standings over her nearest rival, the Austrian Nicole Hosp, who finished back in 27th place.

Vonn also broke the United States career downhill record set by Picabo Street having notched up ten World Cup downhill victories.

In the men’s giant slalom World Cup in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, the Swiss Didier Cuche finished 6th. Teammate Marc Berthod finished 5th. The race was won by the American, Ted Ligety.

Cuche is second place in the overall standings this year and after Saturday has managed to close the gap slightly on top-ranked rival Bode Miller. The American finished 11th in the giant slalom race.
