Life sciences are a major field of research and development in Switzerland. As a nation, Switzerland is highly ranked for the number of scientific publications in several core disciplines such as immunology (ranked 1st), molecular biology (2nd) and pharmacology (3rd). But this research also provides the backbone of the Swiss pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

Second rank for the Swiss biotechnology industry in Europe in terms of revenue and market capitalisation.

Four regions - Lake Geneva, Basel, Ticino and Zurich - are home to Switzerland's so-called biotech clusters.
