He is only the second Swiss player to wear the Reds' strip and is due to sign a contract at the beginning of July.

Degen, a 25-year-old right-back, played for FC Basel before spending four seasons with Borussia Dortmund in the German Bundesliga.

He has 29 caps for the Swiss national squad.

Degen is recovering from an injury and it is not clear whether he will play at the Euro 2008, co-hosted by Switzerland and Austria in June.

There are at least six other Swiss players in England's Premier League.
