Lüthi pipped in Silverstone thriller

Swiss motorcyclist Thomas Lüthi has come second at the British Grand Prix by 0.057sec.

The 23-year-old from Bern was set for his first win in the Moto2 category – which replaced the 250cc series – but was overtaken by Frenchman Jules Cluzel on the final round.

Cluzel, who had crashed out of the past two races, broke away after seven laps together with Simone Corti and Julian Simon, but the trio were caught by Lüthi and local hero Scott Redding. Lüthi then moved quickly through the group to snatch the lead with three of the 18 laps remaining.

But the Vale corner proved decisive, as Lüthi outbraked himself slightly, allowing Cluzel to dive for the lead.

Lüthi was world champion in the 125cc class in 2005 and started racing 250cc in 2007. He last won a race in 2006.
