Lugano clinch basketball title

Manuel Raga and his teammates added some silverware to their trophy cabinet Keystone

The Lugano basketball team have won their third Swiss championships in a row, after beating Fribourg Olympic 72-68 on Wednesday.

The win was their third against Fribourg in the fourth of a best-of-five-game premiership round. The visitors didn’t hand over the match though.

Fribourg got off to a much better start than the locals, leading after the first quarter 25-21. A much-improved defence had a lot to do with the difficulty experienced by Lugano in scoring.

The Ticino team fought back to draw even by half-time by mutliplying their scoring options and going out wide, rather than systematically attempting to play inside.

The second half began far better for Lugano, who drew ahead in the first few minutes, and never gave up their lead. Fribourg refused to give up and had some scoring opportunities shortly before the end of the match, but failed to mark the vital points against their more experienced opponents.

Lugano’s third championship win in a row meant the team also completed its second successive double. The Ticino players won the Swiss Cup earlier this year against Boncourt.
