Lugano crush Lausanne in Swiss Football Championship
Lugano have inflicted a 4-1 defeat on Lausanne in the first return game in the final round of the Swiss Football Championship. The result means Lugano now lead in the competition, with eight victories from thirteen games and a total of 32 points.
The match started well for Lausanne, with a goal by Hellebuyck after only three minutes. Lugano then took half an hour to equalise.
Spurred on by their comeback, Lugano went into second gear five minutes later with another goal courtesy of Gaspoz.
In the second period, Lugano scored again on a penalty, thanks to Bastida. Gimenez scored the fourth and final goal at the end of the match.
Lausanne now lie second to last in the overall league table, with only 18 points. Saturday’s match represented their third defeat in a row, following on from a 4-0 loss to Grasshopper and 3-0 to Lugano.
With three consecutive victories, Lugano now lead the championship, just ahead of St-Gallen (20 points), Grasshopper (18 points) and Servette (17 points). The last five teams in the overall league table are Basel, Zurich, Lausanne and Sion.
