Lugano stay top after weekend games

After the weekend's first division football fixtures, Lugano have clung on to their top spot, four points ahead of St Gallen.

Grasshoppers lost at home to Basel 2-1 on Sunday in an ill-tempered match in which four players – three of them from Zurich – saw the red card.

The loss meant they were unable to close the gap on leaders Lugano who could only draw 2-2 on Saturday against Lausanne. Grasshoppers remain third in the table behind St Gallen.

The weekend saw a healthy number of goals in first division games. Aarau and Lucerne, who are both dangerously close to the bottom of the league, drew 3-3 on Sunday.

The misery persisted for Neuchatel Xamax, unable to lift themselves from the foot of the table, who let in four goals against fellow strugglers Yverdon.

In Saturday’s other matches, last year’s champions St Gallen beat Zurich 2-0, while Servette Geneva lost 1-0 to Sion.
