The Swiss embassy in Harare is closed following the takeover of the Zimbabwean capital by the army and the confinement of President Robert Mugabe. Swiss travellers and residents have been advised to stay where they are and remain in a safe place.

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs updated its travel advisoryExternal link on the African country following Wednesday’s military takeover of Harare.

Pointing out the uncertain development of the situation, the travel advisory asked all Swiss citizens in Harare to remain in a safe place. Tourists in other parts of the country are advised to forgo sightseeing trips and all non-essential travel.

“Find out via the media about how the situation is developing and keep in touch with your tour operator. Comply with the instructions of local authorities,” said the updated travel advisory.

Travellers were also asked to contact airlines concerning their flights home.

Some 260 Swiss citizens are registered with the Swiss embassy in Harare. According to the Zimbabwe Tourist Authority, 7,717 Swiss tourists visited Zimbabwe in 2016, an increase of 16% over the previous year.
