Maurer said it was time to tackle a major project despite foreseeable transport and environmental concerns.
His call came ahead of Friday’s meeting of the umbrella association of Swiss sport organisations to decide on a formal project.
It is believed Switzerland could seek a candidature for 2022 or later.
St Moritz hosted the winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, but later Swiss bids for 2002, 2006 and 2010 failed.
