Montreux festival opens with Phil Collins

British rockstar Phil Collins is to open this year’s Montreux jazz festival with tracks from his new album Going Back.

Tickets for the festival (July 1-17) go on sale from Thursday, April 29.

Organiser Claude Nobs says Collins’ exclusive concert, a musical journey travelling back to the 1960s, will feature soul classics from the celebrated Motown label.

Collins lives a short distance from Montreux at Nyon, which is also on the shores of Lake Geneva.

Montreux will pay tribute to African music and in particular Miriam Makeba on July 9 with a concert by Angélique Kidjo. Youssou N’Dour will also give a performance to honour “Mama Africa”.

Three days later the 44th festival presents a big band night featuring Switzerland’s Pepe Lienhard and Roger Cicero, with a host of guests.

Herbie Hancock is to play John Lennon hits on July16, while Quincy Jones will play with his Global Gumbo All-Stars, a group of young musicians who were discovered at the festival.

Other notables at this year’s event include Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, Brad Mehldau, Chick Corea, Norah Jones, Vanessa Paradis, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Katie Melua and Simply Red.
