More wood to be harvested

The Swiss Environment Office has launched a campaign to promote an increase in the harvesting of local wood.

It said the growth rate of Swiss forests is greater each year than the amount of wood that is felled.

The federal authorities have launched the campaign in expectation of a rising demand for wood as a renewable source of energy and for the construction industry.

The environment office said in order to avoid conflict greater awareness was needed among the Swiss public of the surplus, the growing demand and that wood was harvested in a sustainable manner.

The campaign, backed by the forestry and timber sectors, was kicked off on Monday with a video published on facebook.

The 30-second spot, “Proud of Swiss Wood”, plays on people’s memories of childhood and youth, such as playing with wooden toys and falling in love while sitting on a wooden dock.
