Imposing a president on the people
In the book "Yes to a rosy future", Swiss photographer Nicolas Righetti captured the coordinated orchestration of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's 2007 re-election campaign.
Righetti has already produced several books with portraits of dictators, among them Saparmurad Nijasow, the ruler of Turkmenistan, and Kim-Il-Sung, the ruler of North Korea.
"I'm asked over and over why I'm interested in dictators. I'd say that power doesn't exist without a bit of spectacle; and ultimately it's the spectacle that interests me. My work looks at the message that the hype is designed to convey." (Tribune de Genève, August 30, 2012)
Righetti's photos can be seen until September 30 at the Biel Festival of Photography. The book is published by Work Is Progress.
