Novartis factory shaken by explosion

An explosion has rocked the factory of the Swiss pharmaceuticals giant, Novartis, in Basel. Nobody was injured in Monday night's blast which occurred in the town of Schweizerhalle.

Police said that fire-fighters quickly brought the blaze under control.

According to the results of checks done on the air at the factory, there is no evidence of danger posed either to the environment or humans.

Basel’s criminal office has already launched a criminal investigation into the matter, Novartis said in a statement. The cause of the blaze is not yet known.

The explosion seriously damaged the building, and a company spokesman said that 190 fire-fighters battled the blaze.
