The Swiss 4 x 400 metres men's relay team could not find the speed to get through the first qualifying round of their event. The team, with André Bucher, Laurent Clerc, Alain Rohr and Nicolas Baeriswyl, finished their heat in fourth place in 3 minutes and 6 seconds, behind Jamaica, Great Britain and France.

Laurent Clerc has also run the last race of his career. The Geneva policeman has decided to hang up his spikes.

In the kayak events, St Gallen's Adrian Bachmann failed to reach the finals of the 500-metre race. Bachmann was eliminated in the semi-finals, as he was on Thursday in the 1000-metre event.

In the individual dressage competition, Daniel Ramseier on Rali Baba will take part in the final round on Saturday. He finished 15th out of 25 competitors, with the Netherlands' Anky van Grunsven leading the competition.

Christine Stückelberger on Aquamarin is out of the running. The 1976 gold medallist finished only 22nd in the final Olympics of her career.

In freestyle wrestling, Grégory Martinetti was beaten by Senegal's Alioune Diouf 12-8 in the under 85-kilogramme category despite a protest by the Swiss. Martinetti, who had lost 9-8, had complained about a refereeing decision that gave his adversary three points.

Martinetti will take on the American, Charles Burton, on Saturday. Only the winner will continue in the tournament.
