Opera company unveils programme on wronged women

The general director of Geneva’s Grand Theatre opera company, Renée Auphan, has announced a forthcoming season on the theme of women as victims.

The general director of Geneva’s Grand Theatre opera company, Renée Auphan, has announced a forthcoming season on the theme of women as victims.

Auphan, who steps down in 2001 after six years in which she turned round the fortunes of the once-troubled company, said all but one opera on the programme starting in September dealt with women who had been abused, abandoned or killed by men.

It seems the theme was not deliberately chosen: “It’s a recurring theme in opera,” said Auphan.

The season includes Bizet’s “Carmen”, Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio”, Puccini’s “Tosca” and the less well-known “Madame de” by Jean-Michel Damase, which is about male betrayal.

The one opera outside the overall theme is “Siegfried” from Wagner’s Ring Cycle.
