Paléo lineup unveiled

The "Godfather of Soul", James Brown, will feature at the festival Keystone Archive

The organisers of the Paléo music festival say the event will offer at least 120 concerts this summer.

The festival, now in its 27th year, takes place every July in the town of Nyon, and attracts bands from all over the world.

Highlights this year include the French band Noir Désir, who were a big hit when they first played at the Paléo two years ago.

The British band The Cure will also perform, as will the Italian group Zucchero.

Six days of music

The festival organisers say the six days of the festival provide a showcase for musical creativity from all over the world.

Actress Jane Birkin, who is to perform Arab interpretations of songs by Serge Gainsbourg, will top a French chanson section. Meanwhile Yann Tiersen will perform tracks from the hit film Amélie de Montmartre.

World music will also have its own special stage at the Paléo, where bands from Mexico and Portugal will be featured. And there will be a special night devoted to the music of Cape Verde.

Switzerland not forgotten

Swiss bands, too, will be present at the Paléo; the festival has traditionally been a favourite venue for up and coming local musicians. This year, one Swiss highlight will be the Boulouris Quintett.

And the festival plans to mark the International Year of the Mountain, by highlighting mountain culture with a performance from a group of artists from Switzerland and Central Asia called Tien-Shan-Swiss-Express.

The festival organisers plan to continue the security measures first adopted last year: no more than 33,000 visitors will be permitted on any day of the Paléo. And the giant video screens that were first introduced last year will also be kept.

The festival will run from July 23 to July 28. Six different stages are being prepared at the festival site. Tickets are on sale from this week.
