Paleo Festival hailed a “success”

200,000 people visited this year's Paleo swissinfo.ch

Nyon's Paleo Festival drew to a close on Sunday night with a performance from pop superstar Manu Chao confirming the event's position as the number one open-air festival in Switzerland.

For six sold-out days, 200,000 happy punters enjoyed more than 100 concerts under sun-soaked skies. Daniel Rosselat, the event’s organiser, said this year’s festival had been “something special”.

The British band Texas set the 26th Paleo rolling on Tuesday night, setting the scene for a star-studded line-up that included St Germain, Ben Harper, the Young Gods, Claude Nougaro, Henri Salvador and, of course, Manu Chao.

Following last year’s forgettable festival during which a young girl was raped, the rain poured and the British rock band, Oasis, walked off stage, the organisers made several changes to this year’s event.

Evening audience numbers were reduced from 35,000 to 32,000, security was stepped up on the festival and camping sites, and only those with tickets were allowed to pitch their tents. This meant that the number of campers was down by more than 2,000 on last year to 7,000.

No major incidents were reported for the first time in years.
