Phone operators profit from "Happy New Year"

A record 107 million text and multimedia messages were sent over the past two days by mobile phone subscribers – the equivalent of 15 for every resident of Switzerland.

The biggest phone company, Swisscom, led the way with 47.6 million messages, followed by about 29 million each for operators, Sunrise and Orange.

However, Sunrise was the only company that saw a significant rise in figures, registering about 2 million more than last year.

The numbers also show that mobile phones are used nearly twice as often to wish friends and family a Happy New Year than to send Christmas greetings.

Nonetheless, the Swiss set a record this season by typing more than 65 million messages into their handsets this Christmas.
