Illuminating nature’s raw brilliance
Whether taken by day, twilight or night, light refracts through the black-and-white photos of Swiss photographer Guido Baselgia. The images were captured between 2006 and 2014 for his book ‘Light Fall’. The shots show fascinating landscapes, devoid of human presence.
Baselgia took photos in his home valley, the Engadine, but also travelled to the far north of Norway, to the Tierra del Fuego islands off the southern tip of South America, and to the equator. His use of extremely long exposures has created raw, intense photos of mountains and plains, oceans and coasts, water and ice, snow and wind.
It’s not just nature that enthralls Baselgia. Above all he captures the intensity and behaviour of light and darkness, shadows, sunrise, and the final moments of the day. It is not colours that are important to him, but forms.
‘Light Fall’ captures a wide spectrum of natural phenomena, from the darkness of a polar night to dusk to broad daylight. It is the timeless collection of a hunter in search of the perfect image.
