Rail journey from Kleine Scheidegg to Interlaken
After the tour, the party will return to Grindelwald by rail, then change trains for the journey down to Interlaken and the grand hotel Victoria-Jungfrau. From Grindelwald the trip takes about 30 minutes.
A little more than 100 years ago, according to Baedeker, it took one hour and 20 minutes. But that was considerable progress since Murray reckoned in 1838 that more than four hours by horse-drawn carriage were required.
Murray described Interlaken as an “English colony” since two-thirds of the summer visitors at that time were “English”.
As the handbook confirms, Interlaken has an important place in the history of tourism in the Alps, and today, the sprawling resort still attracts tourists by the thousands – many seeking an alpine adventure, others just a fondue dinner or souvenir Swiss army knife.
The swissinfo party will be taken from the train station by horse-drawn carriage to Interlaken’s main promenade where there will be a traditional reception.
Dating back to 1865, the Victoria-Jungfrau hotel still offers luxurious rooms and a view of the snow-clad Jungfrau massif.
