SAN SALVADOR (Reuters) - A major fire broke out in El Salvador's Finance Ministry on Friday, officials said, trapping some people inside, and local TV footage showed one person jumping several floors from the burning nine-storey building.

The government sent in helicopters to rescue people in the ministry in the capital, San Salvador, as video showed thick plumes of smoke coming from the building.

Defense Minister David Munguia said an undetermined number of people were trapped inside and that helicopters were being used to evacuate people from the roof.

Some workers had been able to evacuate the building, one of several that comprise the finance ministry, Munguia said.

The head of emergency services, Jorge Melendez, confirmed on local television that a person had jumped from the building, but could not say if they had survived the fall.
