Revenue heads upwards at Zurich airport

Sales are taking off at Zurich airport

(Keystone Archive)

Zurich airport boosted turnover last year by almost 10 per cent to SFr523 million ($316 million) as passenger numbers climbed 8.4 per cent to 22.7 million.

The newly privatised "Unique Zurich airport" said on Friday that revenue from non-aviation sources - such as duty-free sales, advertising and parking - overtook earnings from aviation sources for the first time. Non-aviation revenue was up 12 per cent to SFr271 million.

Aviation revenue, primarily from taxation, grew by 7.3 per cent to SFr251 million primarily thanks to more passengers and an increase in the higher number of aircraft using the airport.

Cargo handling increased 10.2 per cent to 545,000 tonnes.

Zurich is Europe's tenth largest airport and is undergoing an expansion programme to cope with an anticipated increase in traffic.

No profit figures were released on Friday. Full results will be released on March 27.
