Rosset downed in Doha

Marc Rosset has suffered his first defeat of the New Year, crashing out in the second round of the ATP tournament in Doha. The Swiss number one was beaten in straight sets by Czech qualifier Bohdan Ulihrach.

Seeded fifth at the one million dollar event, Rosset was expected to have few difficulties against an opponent whom he had beaten in all three of their previous encounters.

But the 30-year-old Genevan, now into his 12th year on the tour, was let down by his own service game. With a success rate of just 49 per cent on his first serve, Rosset managed only two aces in reply to four double faults.

After losing the first set 6-2, the Swiss player appeared to be fighting back as he took a 3-0 lead in the second set. But the match ended catastrophically for Rosset, who won just one point out of the last 19.
