(AP) -- The leasing company of Swissair parent SAirGroup, Flightlease AG, and its United States-based joint venture partner GATX Capital Corp. have ordered 38 Airbus jets, SAirGroup said Monday.
The order is worth some SFr2.5 billion ($1.63 billion), the Swiss company said in a statement.
It is intended to "secure Swissair and its Qualiflyer Group partners key delivery positions on the Airbus production line between now and 2006," and help harmonise the group's fleets, it added.
The 11-member Qualiflyer alliance includes Swissair, Sabena, TAP Air Portugal, Austrian Airlines and Turkish Airlines.
The order comprises 32 aircraft from the A-320 family, including 12 of the European consortium's 107-seat A-318 jets, and six longhaul A-330 aircraft. Deliveries will begin next year.
The jets will be administered by the GATX Flightlease joint-venture company, SAirGroup said.
Flightlease chief executive Hans-Joerg Hunziker said the order marks a "milestone" in the year-old joint venture with San Francisco-based GATX.
