Schmid wins World Cup skicross race

Swiss skier Michael Schmid has won the season-opening World Cup skicross race in the Austrian resort of St Johann.

The 24-year-old beat local skier Andreas Matt in the final for his first World Cup title. Tommy Eliasen of Sweden took third place.

The next World Cup skicross races will be held in Les Contamines, France, on Saturday.

Skicross is based on the snowboard discipline of boarder cross. Despite being a timed racing event, it is often considered part of freestyle skiing because it incorporates terrain features traditionally found in freestyle.

Four skiers start simultaneously and the first two to cross the finish line advance to the next round. Competitors are not allowed to pull or push each other.
